Case Studies - using OFB Eden to fight pests in various crops
CASE STUDIES IN BAJA, MEXICO
Prior to purchase, five large growers in Baja, Mexico tested the efficacy of "OFB Eden" on greenhouse, table tomatoes, greenhouse cucumbers and field, white onions. All crops are grown for USA markets. Systemic pesticides are relied on for control of white flies, thrips, leafhoppers, army worms and fungus. Other pesticides are sprayed as needed. The farms total 4050 hectare in production.
CASE 1 - FIELD GROWN WHITE ONIONS
2 x 2 hectare fields
Problem
The field was infested with thrips. Systemic pesticides were used both in the irrigation system & sprayed. “Cocktails” of other pesticides were also sprayed. In spite of heavy conventional pesticide use, the thrip infestation was heavy. The onions were 2-3 weeks from harvest and a count of 55 thrips/plant was about average.
Application
"OFB Eden" was mixed at 100:1 and sprayed on 1/8 of the field at a rate of 850 liters per hectare. The spray was directed straight down at high pressure (fog). It was early morning with no wind.
Results
99% of the thrips were killed in the sprayed area. Most thrips were killed immediately and the final evaluation was done 24 hours later
Note: "OFB Eden" was used as a contact pesticide. Spraying must be properly executed under close supervision so the pesticide penetrates to the thrips. It kills what it touches. With the high kill rate, It take a long time for the fields to be reinfested. All stages of the thrip life cycle were killed.
CASE 2 - GREENHOUSE, FRESH, TABLE TOMATOES. Mature vines about 5 months old.
2 x 1 hectare greenhouses
Problem
The greenhouses were infested with white flies and some thrips. Systemic pesticides were used both in the irrigation system & sprayed. “Cocktails” of other pesticides were also sprayed. In spite of heavy conventional pesticide use, the white fly infestation was heavy.
Application
"OFB Eden" was mixed at 100:1 and sprayed at 750 liters per hectare on ½ the plants.
Results
99% of the white flies, at all growth stages were killed. After spraying almost all white flies and thrips were killed. The final evaluation was done 24 hours later.
CASE 3 - Cucumbers - Mature vines about 4 months old.
2 x 1 hectare greenhouses
Problem
The greenhouses were infested with white flies and thrips. Systemic pesticides were used both in the irrigation system & sprayed. “Cocktails” of other pesticides were also sprayed. In spite of heavy conventional pesticide use, the thrip and white fly infestation was heavy.
Application
"OFB Eden" was mixed at 100:1 and sprayed at 750 liters per hectare on ½ the plants.
Results
99% of the white flies and thrips , at all growth stages were killed. After spraying almost all white flies and thrips were killed. The final evaluation was done 24 hours later.
Note:
It has been our experience that spraying has not been closely managed and is not adequate at best. To achieve good kill rates with any pesticide, the pests should come in contact with the pesticide.
