Soil Binder Application Instruction and Uses

Application for Road Surfaces

Preparation

Scarify the base down to the appropriate depth, eg 15 cm. With a Road Grader, remove 10 cm of soil to the side of the working surface, leaving +/- 5 cm of dry scarified soil on the working surface.

1st Application of Soil Binder™ – Apply Soil Binder™ evenly over the top and allow it to soak into the scarified soil. The Road Grader then evenly distributes 5 cm of soil, from the side of the working surface, over the treated soil, mixing the treated soil with the dry soil.

2nd Application of Soil Binder™ – Apply Soil Binder™ evenly over the top and allow it to soak into the soil. The Road Grader then evenly distributes the remaining dry soil, from the side of the working surface, over the treated soil, mixing the treated soil with the dry soil.

3rd Application of Soil Binder™ – Apply Soil Binder™ evenly over the top, and allow to soak into the scarified soil. At this stage Soil Binder™ should have been applied evenly throughout the 15 cm depth, without puddles of mud being visible. The Road Grader can now shape the final surface of the soil, ensuring the required levels.

Compaction

Compact thoroughly with a roller, pneumatic or drum roller, until a hard even smooth surface has been obtained. If the soil has been wetted to the correct moisture level, the soil will not stick to the drum of the drum roller.

Final application of Soil Binder™ – The final application is to serve as a sealant over the hard, smooth surface of the working area, and should be applied at a speed of +/- 25 to 30 kilometres an hour, ensuring an even distribution of the product. This will fill any voids which may be in the soil.

Results – A strong, hard, smooth surface will be obtained, which will be impermeable.

A dilution ratio of 7 : 1 will be required for normal soil with fines contents of +17%.

0.45 Litres of OFB Soil Binder™ required treating 1m² of soil, scarified to a depth of 15 cm (6”).

0.225 Litres of OFB Soil Binder™ is required treating 1m² of soil, scarified to a depth of 7.5 cm (3”)

Equipment Required

Road Grader, Water Tanker with Spray Bar and a Drum Compactor.

Maintenance

Road maintenance is largely determined by the traffic volume and weight. The road surface will stand up well to heavy traffic, but can be damaged by stones being carried onto the surface from untreated areas. Should there be a need to overcoat the road due to dirt and small stones from wind causes, treat it with OFB Soil Binder™, diluted to a ration of +- 10:1.

It is important that road surfaces are well crowned, as this will ensure that the maximum wear of the road surface is achieved.

Dust Suppression

OFB Soil Binder™ is highly effective in the suppression of dust. Unlike water, where dust is present the moment the soil dries, OFB Soil Binder™ will only have to be re-applied days after the initial application. The period is largely determined by the traffic over the treated area, as well as the amount of dust blown onto the treated area from surrounding untreated areas.

On areas that have no traffic on it, OFB Soil Binder can be applied without the soil being scarified. On areas that will have traffic on it, to a greater or lesser degree, it is advise able to scarify the soil before the initial application. The depth to be scarified will be determined by the type of soil, as well as on how compacted, or loose, the soil surface is.

The dilution ratio will be determined by the type of soil, but is normally at 12 : 1 to 15 : 1, for the initial application. Subsequent maintenance applications can be as low as a 20 : 1 dilution.
